EPFO Extends September 2026 ECR Due Date to 31 October 2026
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has issued a circular dated 13 October 2026 extending the due date for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and remitting the corresponding statutory contributions for the wage month of September 2026.
The due date has been extended from 15 October 2026 to 31 October 2026.
Why Has EPFO Given the Extension?
According to the circular, establishments have been required to make changes in their payroll systems and related statutory compliance processes following the revision of the wage ceiling with effect from 17 September 2026.
These changes are necessary to ensure proper computation of wages and correct determination of provident fund and allied statutory contributions.
Difficulties Reported by Employers
EPFO received multiple representations from employers, establishments and other stakeholders regarding difficulties in preparation and submission of the September 2026 ECR.
The circular notes that implementation of the revised wage ceiling during the September wage month required changes in:
- Payroll systems
- Employee-wise contribution calculations
- Statutory compliance processes
- Wage records
- Related establishment records
Employers reported technical, operational and administrative challenges in implementing these changes during the same wage month.
Revised Due Date
EPFO has therefore extended the due date for:
- Filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR)
- Remittance of corresponding statutory contributions
for the wage month of September 2026.
Previous due date: 15 October 2026
Extended due date: 31 October 2026
Important: Extension Is Limited to September 2026
EPFO has specifically clarified that the extension applies exclusively to ECR filing and remittance of statutory contributions for the wage month of September 2026.
It should not be interpreted as:
- A general extension for future wage months
- An extension of other statutory timelines
- A waiver of any other obligation under the applicable law or schemes
Employers should therefore continue to follow the normal statutory timelines for all other wage months and compliance requirements.
What Employers and Payroll Teams Should Do
Employers should use the extended period to complete the necessary payroll and compliance changes carefully.
Recommended actions include:
- Review September 2026 payroll calculations
- Verify employee-wise PF wages
- Recheck employee and employer contributions
